Improving The Wiki

Designing the language is fun, but this wiki exists solely to collect our decisions, so thanks for deciding to help us out there!

Getting Started

You will currently need a wikidot account in order to contribute to the wiki. (Just so we know who helps us, and to prevent drive-by spam.) You can go to http://www.wikidot.com to sign up. We're not a wikidot site that requires you to become a member of the site, so a wikidot account is all you'll need!

The Discussions

You will need to look at the discussion threads from time to time, links to which can be found on Improving the Languages. Having a bay12forums account is not necessary, but you may find you need to contribute to the discussion in some small way for wiki purposes, in which case you do need an account.

Requesting Wiki Improvement

If you wish to request something be added/improved/removed on the wiki, you can currently leave something on this page's discuss tab, as a new topic of discussion.

General Editing Rules

Namespaces

Currently the only namespace wiki pages go in is the default wiki: namespace. You can use the "add page" tool in the sidebar to take care of the namespace issue. In the future we may use dwarf:, elf:, etc. to separate the languages. But for now just prefix the page name with the language (e.g. "Dwarven Orthography", "Goblin Word Order"). General pages introducing linguistic concepts and/or that include all the considered languages also go in the wiki: namespace.

If you are adding the contents of a RAW file, please use the raws: namespace instead of wiki: . And make sure you've properly converted the RAW contents from codepage 437 to Unicode first, or you might cause some unsightly mojibake!

Change Description

Whenever you make a change to the wiki, please include info concerning the change in the "Short Description of Changes" box below the editing area. It's helpful to see what changes were made at a glance. For pages you create, "Initial Page" or "Initial Revision" is sufficient.

Redirects

Redirects help deal with alternate names for pages, without page duplication.

Adding a Redirect

Create the new page, and then use the Redirect module (Documentation Here).

Modifying/Removing a Redirect

If you need to change the destination of a redirect, or remove it entirely (because the page title now needs is no longer just an alternate for its destination), then add /noredirect/true to the end of the URL of the page you wish to edit. Example:

http://your-wiki.wikidot.com/page-with-redirect/noredirect/true

Add Link

When you've written the page, perhaps you can place a link to it on one of the pages linked to from the main page?

Specific Improvement Ideas

Take on Wiki Improvements

Especially if you're new to helping out here, check out the above section "Requesting Wiki Improvement" to see where people request changes to the site. Find a request you can tackle and do it! When you've successfully completed the task, leave a comment in the request's discussion stating you've done so, and a link to what you did.

Catalog Recent Decisions

If a decision on a language has just been made, and no-one has yet to note this in this wiki, perhaps you can do so! This would require you to be following the discussion thread, at least occasionally.
